Urban trees offer huge benefits to cities and their inhabitants: From the aesthetic value of greenery and the biophilia effect – the positive mental health and wellbeing impacts of being near nature – to the now well-researched contribution that street trees make to the quality of our air and the reduction in pollution. To say nothing of the value of shade on a warm day!

Sadly, it isn’t always the case that trees in urban settings are well cared for. In this case, we were commissioned to fell two early mature Alder trees which had been left unpruned for many years, and the results are obvious. In this case, new trees will be planted and with the benefit of many years of knowledge about the value of street trees, we’re confident that the replacements will be better managed in future.

There is so much great practice in our European neighbours in France and Spain particularly, where pollarding remains the preferred way to manage mature trees with large crowns. Regular crown removal allows even large trees to remain in situ in relatively small urban spaces but retains all the benefits of a green streetscape. Now, if someone could just invent a stretchy tree guard…!
