When they fail, trees don’t care where they land, and as we have seen from the news when the weather is really bad, that can have terrible consequences.

Thankfully, no one was hurt when this early-mature Alder went down over the river Loddon in a domestic garden in old Basing.

Risk assessment is at the heart of all practical tree surgery work.  In this case, a team of three cut the stem of the tree at the base where it failed, and winched it safely over the water, processing it into sections as it reached the bank.   Working like this, the weight of the tree could be effectively managed and the risk of falling in it the water mitigated by staying as far from it as we could!

For anyone who enjoys practical problem solving, variety and collaborating with others to achieve a physical, outdoor challenge safely, tree surgery offers a fantastic career.
