In recent years it has become normal practice to use a Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP) wherever we can to work safely at height.
These pieces of kit come in different modes, sixes and lengths of reach, static, tracked and vehicle-mounted, so there is a choice to suit the terrain and scope of the work.
The selection of kit is a core part of the method plan that we create as we assess the risks in each job…and no two jobs are prepared or treated in exactly the same way because of the specific requirements of each site. Unpredictable changes that we must take account of on a dynamic basis, such as strong winds on the planned day of work can prevent us being able to use the MEWP, for obvious reasons!
Of course, tree surgeons still need to work exclusively from a rope and harness where there is no possibility of safe access for a MEWP and this will always be the case, but gone are the days (we hope) when unqualified and insured people, with no protective kit, would shin up to the top of a crown and “top it”.
